Challenges: Team Score method

The Team Score Method is designed to create a fair balance between activity and participation. It builds on the Average Method (with a slight adjustment) and adds a participation bonus factor.

The formula is:

(Total Activity ÷ (Active Members + Inactive Members ÷ 3)) × [1 + 0.25 × (Average Days Logged Per Member ÷ Challenge Length in Days)]

Step 1: Adjusted Average

The first part of the formula:

Total Activity ÷ (Active Members + Inactive Members ÷ 3)

  • This is similar to the Average Method but modified to include inactive members.

  • Inactive members are weighted less (divided by 3), so they don’t drag the team down too much but still encourage participation.

Step 2: Participation Bonus

The second part of the formula is the participation multiplier:

[1 + 0.25 × (Average Days Logged Per Member ÷ Challenge Length in Days)]

  • We calculate the average days logged per member, including inactive members, and divide by the total challenge length.

  • This gives the team’s participation percentage (maximum value = 1 if every member logs activity every day).

  • We then multiply this by 0.25 and add 1.

    • Example: If participation = 1 (perfect), the team gets the full 25% bonus.

    • If participation is lower, the bonus scales down proportionally.

Final Score

By multiplying the adjusted average activity with the participation bonus, the Team Score fairly reflects both how active the team is and how consistently they participate.

Why This Works

  • Encourages all members to log activity, not just a few.

  • Ensures teams of different sizes are compared on a consistent basis.

  • Rewards participation and consistency, not just total or average steps.
